Stages Of Age-Related Dry Macular Degeneration

January 30th, 2008 | by admin |

The earliest stage of the disease is marked by some small drusen (yellowish debris) deposits in the retina, or perhaps a small amount of middle-size drusen.

The intermediate stage of dry macular degeneration shows a large number of medium size drusen or a large, odd shaped drusen (soft drusen). There  is blurred vision, semi-blindness, or distorted vision.

The advanced stage of dry macular degeneration has the same drusen content as the intermediate but the light sensing cells are broken down.  The whole center vision can be blocked and only peripheral vision is in tact.
